Colonial vs Victorian Homes

The Colonial house style consists of many styles built during the "Colonial" period (early 18th Century). Distinguishing features are symmetrical and square architecture, decorative crown above front door, narrow side windows flanking the front door and paired chimneys. Although Colonial is an architectural style, there are different types such as First Period English, French Colonial, Georgian Colonial, Federal, Early Classical Revival, Spanish Colonial, Colonial Revival, Dutch Colonial, New England Colonial, and Spanish Eclectic. Victorian houses are architecturally commonly referred to as the Victorian Style but this style is really a period in history. Features that make a Victorian home stand out are steeply pitched roof of irregular shape, usually with dominant front-facing gable, textured shingles to avoid smooth-walled appearance, partial or full-width asymmetrical porch and asymmetrical facade. Although these architectural features help distinguish a Victorian style, there are different types such as: Second Empire, Queen Anne, Stick, Shingle and Richardsonian Romanesque.
